Fun Facts and Highlights
  • The class of 1957 was the first graduating class of West Jefferson High School.
  • West Jefferson was runner-up in the Class B Regional Track and Field Meet.
  • Top songs included Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up by Elvis Presley, Love Letters in Sand by Pat Boone, That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly, and Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis.

  • Pat Jones was the student body president.
  • The Quiz Bowl team took 1st place for the first time ever in the history of WJHS.
  • The panther's basketball team won the Nuclear League, District 5 & 6, and the State A-3 Championships."
  • "Richard Chase climaxed a superb varsity career by scoring over 500 points his senior year and leading the squad to an overall 23 - 1 season mark", (Coach Jon Wilson, 1974 Yearbook).

  • Maurice Martin was the student body president.
  • The home economics building was built.
  • Girls were allowed to letter in track, and the first two were Julee Simmons and Debra Peterson.  Girls track actually started in the 1973 - 1974 school year because of the law that was passed known as Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972.

  • Rick Berrett broke a state record in the high jump at 6' 9-3/4".
  • The drill team took first place at districts.
  • The Top Song was Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright) by Rod Stewart (other songs include Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and Do You Feel Like We Do by Peter Frampton).

  • Monty Ebgert and Ray Shively were the two wrestlers who went to state.
  • Mr. Southerland was the band and chorus teacher..
  • The varsity football record:  3 wins and 6 losses.
  • Elivs Presley died at age 42.

  • The football team went to the state A-3 playoffs and got 2nd place.
  • Volleyball was a first for girls sports at WJHS (even though many years prior girls played unofficially at the Roberts and West Jefferson high schools.)
  • Kari Woods was the Peppy Panther.

  • Boys baseball became an official school sport.
  • 75 seniors had their picture taken for the yearbook.
